Dr Girish Kasaravalli knowing the vastness of the topic 100 years of Indian cinema preferred to talk on the four stages of types of hero in Kannada cinema in his first lecture on Dr Vishnuvardhana Smaraka Upanyasa. According to Dr Girish there is not much of difference of 100 years of Indian cinema and Kannada cinema growth in the last 78 years.

I don’t believe in numbers and periodic dates that should be talked about when it comes to history stated Dr Girish Kasaravalli. The observation what I make today need not be accepted. It could be argued in a healthy way and that creates platform from the development he felt.

As a cinema practitioner what I would say is that there are four types that lead to changes of hero culture in cinema. In the first stage the socio and cultural counted a lot in the 60 and 70. It was when the Truth, Loyalty, giving respect to elders and imbibing good things was part of the first type of hero. Dr Rajakumar as a matter of fact stood as a pillar in this category. Reaching the ‘Adarsha’ (Model) was very important in the historical, mythological films.

In the next stage the personality of hero looking at the society and explaining the trauma of it became important. Before ‘Nagarahavu’ there were films like Gejje Pooje, Sharapanjara that looked at the society. It is not Samskara alone contributed for path breaking cinema. The value and complexity increased among the social films. Hero while losing set a trend.

Then the third stage started uncovering, imitating and questioning the real happening with loudness. The emotional level increased and it represented the system. Quoting the example of Krishnana Kolalina Kare… the films like Uyyale and others started explaining the inner politics. It was between Bhavane and Anusandhana. It reflected something. The perspective of looking at also changed. The prominence to editing, camera music all started adding.

The fourth stage of ‘Nayaka’ is consumerist culture. The commercialization growth has out beaten everything. This stage is dangerous as everything is looked in the form of money he stated.

This type of memorial lecture would help in new thoughts and discussion that evolves is very important. That is the reason for me to accept delivering of lecture today mentioned Padmasri Dr Girish Kasaravalli.
